INTERVIEW // JAK CREATIVE
Who/what is Jak Creative, and what is your role/s within the company?
JAK Creative & Events is my business which I co-founded with Jane Klose. My role is Creative Director.
Which three words best describe you?
This covers a nerd like obsession with research as well as a love of the whimsical, quirky and strange
From generating moods, sparking conversations and conceiving ideas, creativity is a moment to moment necessity
I just felt that another C-word was appropriate ;-). Largely my role is about communication. Speaking to people, translating ideas, finding and creating images to tell a story. I use images just as much as words. I’m also very partial to memes and emojis and I’m not afraid to use them in emails!
Tell us a little about one of your most memorable projects you’ve worked on:
This year’s Cisco conference After Party. Titled “Live on the Green’, this project was like a garden party crossed with a music festival and required us to transform Margaret Court Arena into an immersive and engaging event space. It was fun to design and build and hit all JAK’s sweet spots in the perfect brief for us to really show off.
A great day begins with?
Not feeling like I want to press snooze! Breakfast with inspiring colleagues followed by a takeaway coffee from my favourite café. Getting to the office and opening my favourite blogs and subscriptions to get my head in the game.
What are your favourite trends of the moment?
High Chroma/Saturation colours are feeling fun for me, inspiring design that feels vibrant and technological.
Big colour contrasts and bold palettes are really helpful for shifting energy and waking people’s faces up!
I’m also enjoying reading and exploring future trends for technology and brands. I recently posted a blog article on this!
It’s great stuff to think about and play with.
In the event space I’m really inspired by the direction of progressing to truly engaging and thoughtfully designed spaces to move people and spark ideas and wonder.
Name your favourite Melbourne location
I’m pretty old skool so I have to say the NGV is a really special place for me to visit. I don’t get there as much as I’d like to (must buy membership this year!). The spaces are always transforming and full of incredible exhibitions and events. Every time I visit I am filled with inspiration from the smallest detail to biggest installation and leave with so many reasons to return.
Who or what inspires you? Where do you look for inspiration?
I subscribe to design blogs that cover multiple topics such as art, interiors, fashion, photography, technology and architecture. Taking a glimpse into these worlds regularly serve as a great well of inspiration for me.
Where would you host your dream event?
In a cloud. It would be a constructed cloud though so you wouldn’t fall through it
The last song I listened to on repeat was?
Tracy Jacks by Blur (I was feeling nostalgic)
Which Dann Event Hire piece is your favourite?
Apart from our Havana Service Trolley, I am I love with the Nero three seater velvet lounge in pink (swoon!)
If you were a piece of furniture which would you be? Why?
I would be a Featherston Armchair with a footrest (I like friends) in sky blue. I would be very happy indeed with people grabbing a book and settling in to take their minds away from the world for a while. I would also have other friends close by like a cool floor lamp, side table and a super plush blanket.
