INTERVIEW // RUBY AND JAMES
Let’s start at the very beginning. Tell us how Ruby and James came to be.
We both met while working together as visual merchandisers and every day we worked together we would talk
and dream about starting our own business. Beck had asked Jess to help her style her own wedding, one thing led to another (Beck ended up eloping) but this is where the business relationship blossomed and we knew this is what, we were meant to do.
Which three words best describes Ruby and James?
1. Design focused
The design industry is so vast and global. Which other designers, artists or creative people continue to inspire you?
There are so many creatives that inspire us daily but two spring to mind.
Makoto Azuma, a Japanese Floral Artist; his installations and designs are literally out of this world (check out what he sent into space!) Secondly, Kelly Wearstler; we are obsessed with her bespoke interior designs.
What are your favourite trends of the moment? What can’t you get enough of right now?
We can’t get enough of minimalism and the sheer beauty of simple design and forms. Johanna Ortiz for her romantic exotic floral motifs and western style fashion. We’ve also been lusting over restaurant and hotel interiors, from the signage to the flooring to the fittings and materials.
What colour palettes are you enjoying working with at the moment?
Terracotta, peach, pinks, tonal greys paired with rich burgundy and emerald greens. Metallic silver has also been on our radar!
Tell us a little more about some of the memorable projects you’ve worked on:
There are quite a few memorable projects that stand out for us but one of the most magical ones, was a secret proposal set up in the middle of nowhere, hidden in the Yarra Valley. We set up a deluxe picnic for two; complete with picnic rugs, cushions, candles and festoon lighting. Butterflies flew out on cue, the bride to be had no idea at the time and we had arranged a photographer
to hide in the bushes to capture the moment….and that she did! It was a big yes and we’re now planning their winter wedding in August.
As business that has established a following over past few years, what advice can you provide to other creatives business’ building their portfolio within events?
NETWORKING! It has been, hands down, the most effective way for us to build our portfolio. At the beginning of our R+J journey we styled weddings and events for friends and family which helped us build our portfolio of images with professional photographers. Organising styled shoots with like-minded vendors also helped us grow, both creatively and in a business sense too. Vendors shared with us their highs and their lows which in hind sight really helped us shape the business into what it is today. It is an ever-evolving process and we are still learning better techniques and ways to do things every single day.
If possibilities were endless, what would be your dream creative project?
Hmmm this is a tricky one! We would love to work on a meaningful event for the community; to give back to the people that have helped us along the way.
In an industry that is constantly on the move. What do you do to get away from it all
to rest and recharge?
At the beginning we threw ourselves in, said yes to everything and made it happen somehow or another. As the business grows we have learned to be kinder to ourselves and no longer take on every job that comes our way. We no longer book a wedding every weekend during wedding season, so we can enjoy that downtime with our friends and family. Whether that be enjoying long brunches, weekend markets and taking day trips to explore places we haven’t been before.
What’s your favourite Melbourne hang out and why?
Au79 Café in Abbotsford, the interior is to die, we love their use of plants in the space and the food and service is impeccable. Plus, they are always so accommodating when we are meeting clients there.
Which Dann Event Hire piece is your favourite?
The new LUNA range…. there’s just not enough heart eyes emoji’s for these new products!!
If you were a piece of furniture which would you be? Why.
Haha this was probably the only question that really stumped us! It would have to be a dining table because it plays a vital role in bringing all your loved ones together, whether that be family dinners, birthdays or weddings. Plus, the options are endless when styling them.
