INTERVIEW // SOLUTION RED
Who is Solution Red, and what is your role within the company?
Solution RED is a unique hybrid of creative and technical minds who design, supply and install amazing concepts across Melbourne, the Gold Coast, around Australia and abroad.
I am a hands on leader, managing director one minute, crew the next. I still love getting on site in fact, on the set up of the after party for Matilda the Musical I was sitting on the floor, in my blacks, putting table lamps together. A crew member that I didn’t know came up and said “do you need a hand”. Later in the evening she found out who I was and now calls me undercover boss.
You have recently launched your new website which is exciting! Can you tell us a bit more about the launch?
Our sparkling new website went live just before Christmas. Our team and our services have evolved so much since our websites last incarnation, so it was time for our digital face to match what is behind the curtain. It is a small sample of our recent achievements and we look forward to extending our ‘Portfolio’ and sharing event inspiration from our adventures.
Which three words best describes Solution Red?
You work on a variety of events and projects. What have been one or two of your favourite events / projects recently?
Opening party for Kinky Boots – RED being the predominant colour and of course rubbing shoulders with Cindy!!
Which other Australian event creative, designers, artists or individuals are you loving at the moment?
I love reliving Florence Broadhurst – check her out.
David Hockney Exhibition at NGV – progressive integration of technology with this art.
What are your favourite trends of the moment?
Organic and outdoor spaces – love food trucks.
The rise of Izakaya in Melbourne – one can never get enough Saki.
For something different from food and alcohol – the use of raw materials, wood, stone and metals with accents of black. The exterior of the new Stokehouse is a prime example.
What colour palette are you loving?
Bright and vivacious colour blocking along with the muted pastels reminiscent of the 1950’s.
What can’t you get enough of right now?
Sunny Sunday’s with margarita’s in hand! Even better if I were sipping them on a beach in Mexico.
Can you list for us your top resources across any media that you turn to when you’re in need of creative inspiration?
Nature, web and social media, movies, theatre, Zinio and dreams.
What has been Solution Red’s proudest achievement?
Singling out any one in particular is difficult because pride is a driving word at Solution RED and that encompasses design and delivery of each and every event.
When someone says it can’t be done we love to prove them wrong. In 2008 Atlantic Group approach us to partner in the launch of their new venture, off-site catering. The challenge was to find a unique venue that no one had used for an event. The derelict car park that is now The Blood Bank was transposed into the craziest, funkiest, Zen environment that took the guests breath away. To say the event was amazing is mild and the pride rose when we were awarded a joint Platinum Award for Event of the Year from Meetings & Events Australia.
What is the best mistake you have ever made?
From a business perspective it would have to be not listening to the outside world telling me “you’re mad opening your own business” they couldn’t have been more far from the truth. The highs and lows are what gives me the passion to push through and trust me there have been some mountains to climb.
On a personal note – having two children before I turned 24. Enough said.
Where would you host your dream event?
The World’s Longest Lunch on the first Sunday of spring running the length of the Champs Elysees. No matter which way you turn the view is amazing.
What do you do to get away from it all?
Currently I am in the throes of moving house so I’m head down and bum up de-cluttering, but to get away from that there is nothing more enjoyable than pushing my granddaughters on a swing, playing shops or pretending that I can’t ride a scooter as well as them. One day they will realise I just can’t ride a scooter.
Name your favourite Melbourne location/s?
My perfect day:
0900: Breakfast in the Yarraville Village, pick any café they are all fabulous
1000: Sun Theatre to watch an inspiring movie or more than likely a chick flick. The beauty of a local icon shines out in this historic building which was revamped some years ago after it was vandalised.
1300: Lunch at Shelly’s Beach Pavilion on The Esplanade Williamstown looking over the bay. As a teenager this was the old concrete bathing sheds where groups would hang out and sneak the odd cigarette and drink cheap wine, of course that wasn’t me!!!
1900: Dinner at Mr Piccolo Kitchen and Bar, my favourite Italian restaurant. The food is fresh and authentic, the wine selection is amazing and the atmosphere so welcoming.
Which Dann Event Hire piece is your favourite?
Anything in the Havana range. Also love sprawling on a lush Nero couch.
If you were a piece of furniture which would you be? Why?
Dining table – always surrounded by people and hearing so many wonderful conversations plus the odd bit of gossip.
